More Homeowners Plan to Improve Their Homes Than Move

March 20, 2019

According to a 2018 study commissioned by insurance provider Hiscox, more homeowners are now planning to improve their homes than move. In fact since 2013,the number has risen fivefold, from 3% of homeowners, to 15%, that’s over 4 million householders.

So why the increase? Could it be the uncertainty of Brexit, interest rates, high stamp duty, and removal costs.

The benefits of improving, according to the survey, are seen as increasing property value, bespoke design to meet lifestyle and taste, and an investment for the future. Another consideration is future proofing, to provide adaptable accommodation in older age.

Ways to reinvent home  to  a more comfortable and welcoming space include;

  • Revamping your kitchen for improving your family area and storage space.

  • Creating a social room where you can regroup in the morning or evening, or to entertain friends.

  • Do up your bathroom for some first and last thing luxury.

  • Build an extension, to the side, to the back, or go up with a first floor.

  • What about a garden studio for those arty days of painting, writing, or practising your favourite musical instrument?

  • Loft conversions are always a popular choice, make use of that dark and dusty attic. Create  a fabulous bedroom, or two.

  • Try a conservatory, or better still a substantial orangery.

  • You could also try replacing your windows. Design and energy ratings have come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Your home will look better, and feel so much cosier in those long winter days.

Finally don’t forget home improvements for the less able, over 60’s with mobility needs may qualify for VAT discounts. We’ll tell you.

So much choice to make the most of that valuable space which forms part of your home but could contribute so much more.  Why not contact the team at HET  to see how we could help you.  Don't move, improve!
